Milledgeville and Baldwin County, Georgia, have a rich history of producing products from our red clay soil. A “brickyard” was operated on our site from 1908 until 1979, manufacturing bricks, vitrified clay pipe, flue linings, drain tiles, and other “burned clay” products. Over the years, hundreds of thousands of feet of pipe were made, and as in any endeavor of that magnitude, thousands of feet of pipe were discarded due to cracks or distortion and deformity. These culls were deposited on the back side of the plant and over time were covered with dirt and vegetation.
At Oconee TerraCotta, we are retrieving and then producing an aggregate made from these discarded clay pipes. We have several distinct sizes. Our “Landscape Chip” is a great alternative to pine straw and bark mulches, as it does not need to be replaced each season. Terra cotta is a naturally porous material that allows penetration of water while helping to retain moisture and conserve water.
The “Pathway Chip” is an excellent replacement for common gravel for driveways or garden paths. It is comparable in size to a pea gravel, which makes it easy to walk upon.
The rich ceramic dust, called “Fines” is mostly used on baseball fields, as is the “Warning Track” product, but the distinctive color can enhance driveways and parking areas as well.
Our products are durable, versatile, affordable, and environmentally friendly. We will be happy to provide samples upon request.
